Luxury Rehab Centers

Substance abuse is a serious problem for millions of Americans, regardless of social standing or financial status. These individuals need help to overcome their addictions, which is why the U.S. drug treatment industry is estimated to bring in approximately $35 billion a year. Drug or alcohol rehab of any kind is expensive, and for the average American, that can mean taking on a significant debt burden for even the most basic of treatment programs or facilities.

For a fortunate few with the financial means, however, substance abuse treatment is available in the form of top-level services and high-end amenities known as luxury drug rehab. Many people automatically discount “luxury rehab” as nothing more than a place for the rich and famous to pretend at recovery while enjoying fine food and high-class activities in and opulent setting. This is simply not true, though. While luxury treatment facilities offer clients the best of accommodations it’s important to note that, as this guide will show, the serious work of treatment and recovery are the top concerns.

Fast Facts About Luxury Drug Rehab Centers

  • Major differences between luxury and standard private treatment facilities include quality of accommodations, variety and level of available services, activities and amenities. And cost.
  • In addition, luxury rehab centers often offer specialized treatments and cutting-edge therapies not commonly available at standard rehab facilities.
  • Luxury alcohol treatment is expensive, but it’s not just for celebrities and the ultra-rich.
  • Most luxury facilities accept payment from a wide range of insurance providers, but insurance rarely comes close to covering the entire cost of treatment.
  • Common amenities of rehab resorts include private chefs and gourmet cuisine, personal trainers and fully-equipped gyms, swimming pools, private suites, maid services, spas and saunas, yoga, meditation, holistic therapies, beautiful grounds and views, comprehensive privacy and security services – and much more.

What Is Luxury Rehab?

Simply put, luxury rehab refers to inpatient substance abuse (drugs and alcohol) detoxification and rehabilitative treatment programs that are located in what might best be described as “spa-like” facilities. Luxury drug rehabs offer high-end amenities and activities on expansive campuses typically located within beautiful, natural surroundings. The purpose of these facilities is to allow a client to detox from, and receive rehabilitative treatment for, his or her addiction in the most comfortable and stress-free environment possible.

As you might expect, a stay at a luxurious rehab center is not cheap, with prices often in the tens of thousands of dollars ($30,000 to $60,000, or more, at the highest-end facilities) for a 30-day stay. And while a health insurance policy will likely pick up a small portion of the bill, the remaining cost is strictly the responsibility of the patient.

The Benefits of Luxury Treatment Centers

Luxury treatment facilities offer a number of advantages and benefits over standard rehab programs. Here are a few of the most common:

Privacy

While standard rehab centers typically do their best to keep treatment as private as possible, patient privacy is of paramount concern at luxury rehab facilities. Luxury centers understand that the activities of their clients are often of interest to the media and public at-large, and therefore take all steps necessary to ensure client anonymity.

At luxury centers, privacy doesn’t just mean privacy from the outside world, it also refers to privacy within facility itself. Most luxury centers provide each patient with his or her own well-appointed room with private bath and other high-end amenities.

Individualized Care

One-on-one attention, both in terms of treatment therapies and extracurricular activities, is a major feature of luxury alcohol rehab programs. Luxury centers commonly cater to a much smaller number of clients at any given time, and that means a higher staff-to-client ratio, resulting in more unique services and greater individualized attention.

Top-Tier Staff

Treatment at a luxury center is typically provided by the best doctors, therapists, counselors, administrators, and others that money can buy. Clients may also expect to be served by highly-trained and experienced support staff, including trainers, instructors, chefs, and others.

Cutting Edge Specialized Treatment

Ongoing research into every aspect of addiction recovery is constantly leading to newer and more effective forms of treatment. Luxury rehab facilities are often at the forefront of these cutting-edge specialized treatment technologies, incorporating the newest and most innovative therapies and techniques as they become available.

Environment and Services

To a great extent, luxury drug rehab is all atmosphere and amenities. Treatment at standard centers is often provided in cramped, hospital-like facilities located in less-than-desirable neighborhoods. Luxury centers, on the other hand, are typically situated on beautiful, expansive campuses, and offer a vast array of high-end programs and activities, all designed to provide clients with a stress-free recovery environment.

How Luxury Rehab Facilities Work

The substance abuse treatment process varies according to the substance abused and severity of the addiction, as well as the treatment approach offered by the specific facility. The process for most patients at a luxury rehab center will include the following steps:

  • Intake and Evaluation
  • Detoxification
  • Rehabilitation
  • Upon arrival at the rehab center, the patient receives a comprehensive medical and psychological evaluation to determine the type and severity of his or her addiction, as well as the involvement of any co-occurring disorders. This evaluation provides the blueprint for the patient’s treatment and care throughout their stay at the center.

  • Detoxification is another term for withdrawal. The patient is provided a comfortable and safe environment in which to rid his or her body of the addictive substance. Detoxification commonly incorporates the use of medication to help alleviate the withdrawal symptoms. The focus for the patient during detox is rest and healing.

  • The bulk of the patient’s stay at rehab is spent in the rehabilitation phase, which consists of individual and group therapy sessions, along with participation in the wide variety of physical, spiritual and other well-being activities. The focus of rehabilitation is on continued healing, gaining an understanding of the causes of the patient’s substance abuse, and the development of methods to achieve and maintain long-term sobriety.

What Happens After Luxury Rehab?

As with any level or form of alcohol or substance abuse treatment – luxury treatment included – recovery is an ongoing process. Individuals leaving their luxury treatment facility will, in most cases, return to their regular lives, but with one very important addition: a focus on maintaining their sobriety and avoiding relapse. Luxury rehab patients exit treatment with a comprehensive aftercare plan that will normally include:

  • Continued outpatient treatment: The recovering addict will attend regularly-scheduled group therapy and individual counseling sessions with a licensed therapist, during which he or she will continue to build on the life skills learned during inpatient treatment, and share any present issues or challenges to maintaining sobriety.
  • 12-step program participation: 12-step programs are commonly a part of the treatment scheme at most luxury inpatient facilities. Patients are encouraged to continue their attendance and participation at 12-step meetings after leaving their inpatient programs.

Aftercare may additionally include continued drug testing and the use of medication.

Most luxury treatment centers offer outpatient treatment options and other aftercare services to their clients living nearby.

What to do if You Relapse

Among the many advantages to treatment at a luxury rehab center is patient access to a variety of relapse prevention services, including regular telephone calls to staff therapists and aftercare coordinators, and weekend follow-up events at the facility where clients can share their struggles and successes with recovery.

Nevertheless, relapse into substance abuse is an unfortunate, but common occurrence. When relapse occurs, it is important for the patient to: 1) realize that relapse is not an ultimate failure of treatment, but only a temporary setback in the recovery process; and 2) return to recovery as soon as possible by employing the knowledge and methods learned during his or her inpatient stay, and by reaching out to their support system for help.

Q&A with a Luxury Treatment Center Expert

About Fredi-Ruth Levitt, LCSW
About Fredi-Ruth Levitt, LCSW

Fredi-Ruth Levitt is the Executive Director of Clinical Services at Seaside Palm Beach. Seaside Palm Beach offers drug and alcohol detox, inpatient and outpatient luxury and executive services at its facilities located across the street from the beach and ocean on Singer Island in Palm Beach County, Florida. Seaside features a low staff-to-patient ratio and amenities that include deluxe accommodations, gourmet cuisine, laundry and maid services, concierge service, swimming pool, access to off-site fitness facilities, a full-sized fully operational business center, and more.

  • Q. How would you describe what luxury treatment means at Seaside Palm Beach?

Seaside’s facilities are very nice. We’re on Singer Island, and we have the beach right across the street. The facility is set back, and it’s kind of like a bungalow style. We try to use the beauty of what we have. Our clients want peace and serenity, so we really try to incorporate mind, body and spirit. Patients get a lot of individualized services. We try to cater towards the things they might like, activities that are more luxurious.

    Q. Can you give us an idea of the types of amenities and services you have?

We have a pool. We have a chef and the patients can order what they want. We have a concierge. We have a variety of other services, like massage, acupuncture, reiki, personal trainers. We also allow clients to bring their pets and sometimes incorporate the pets into therapy. Clients may have a certain place they would like to go or activity they want to do. We’ll try to make that work.

As for treatment, patients get a lot more [individual] therapy time. Patients can see their therapist every day if they want.

    Q. So, differentiating between what might be a standard facility and a luxury facility, it sounds like the big differences are greater individualization and more amenities. Would that be a fair observation?

Yes. We meet the clients where they’re at and work from there. It’s very individualized, very personable. We try to cater to their needs as best we can within our program.

    Q. How many clients do you have in treatment at any given time at Seaside?

It depends. Our capacity if 32, but we’ve never gotten to 32. We’ve gotten to maybe 26. But the average is about 12 to 15.

    Q. Do clients at Seaside have their own rooms, or do they share rooms?

It depends on the client. If the client pays for a private room, he or she can get one. If they want to pay less, they can get a semi-private room. We have townhouses and master suites. And then we have cute apartments. The patients who bring their animals usually take the apartments.

    Q. When people think about luxury rehab, many believe that it’s only for celebrities and the very rich. Is that a realistic view? Who actually makes up your clientele?

It’s a mix. We have a lot of executives, people who have their own businesses. We’ve had some sports people. We’ve had a director. But, at least during my time here, it’s been more people who have businesses that have been very successful.

    Q. So it might be safe to say that your clients are people of means, but they don’t have to be super wealthy or famous.

    That’s right.
