A 2017 National Drug Early Warning Signal (NDEWS) Report showed alcohol and marijuana as the most abused substances for youth aged 12 through high school in Los Angeles. Treatment admissions for heroin use rose between 2012-2016 to equal the number of admissions for methamphetamine treatment.
As with other parts of California and states near the Mexican border, there has been an increase in methamphetamine usage, according to NDEWS. “Methamphetamine ranked number 1 in 2016 for primary drug at treatment admission and for drug reports from the National Forensic Laboratory Information System (NFLIS) with increases in percentages for 2016 over 2015,” says the report, citing declining prices and small quantity availability as contributing factors.
Other than heroin/morphine, NDEWS reveals that opioid use declined from 2015 to 2016, despite public concern. However, the Los Angeles medical toxicology reports of positive fentanyl testing doubled during the same timeframe.
While NEDEWS shows a decline in substance abuse treatment admissions between 2012 and 2016, decreases in state funding and service delivery changes are the reasons. Four substances accounted for 90% of Los Angeles treatment admissions – methamphetamines (29%), heroin (29%), alcohol (17%) and marijuana (15%). Prescription opioids admissions only accounted for 4%.
According to Safe Med LA, 400 people die in Los Angeles each year due to prescription drug overdoses.
